Ultravox were such an influence on the young
Gary Numan that when he toured The Pleasure Principle in 1979 (including
Friars), he borrowed Billy Currie for his band.
After John Foxx left to pursue a solo career
(Underpass, No One Driving etc), and Robin Simon had also gone, the
remaining core three employed a Scotsman called James 'Midge' Ure. His
pedigree had been The Rich Kids and...er...Slik. They went on to be huge
and in a last throw of the dice, they put out Vienna as a single and the
rest is history. Ultravox ended in acrimony though. Ure is still a
successful solo artiste. Billy Currie is a solo artiste and also toured as
U-Vox. Chris (Cross) St John is now a psychotherapist. Cann is living back
in the US.
The Ure/Cross/Currie/Cann line up reunited
for the first time in 25 years in 2009 for a UK tour
and continues into 2010.
