The webmaster, north Bucks:
Another great party night but the June gig slightly eclipsed it.
This gig sold out in advance despite the record admission price (and
stayed a record till 2009) and I had ticket no 1 getting to Earth Records very early
in the day. The gig had no support act, but not through anyone’s fault.
Originally the support was Musical Youth. They scored big with Pass The Dutchie and it promised to be a good support until the pesky education
authorities made the band go to school rather than tour. The replacement
support, The Flying Pickets (who would go on to greater success), pulled
out on the day when one of the band took ill. This was the second and last
Friars appearance, the sheer scale of their next production making an
appearance not a possibility.
Joe McCallion, writing for
the Friars Aylesbury website in 2009:
"Kid
Creole when he appeared at Friars was appearing on the Old Grey Whistle
Test that night and Dave Stopps set up the Aston hall with a telly so
when the gig finished we escorted the group over there to watch it and
the champers and booze flowed freely.
A really
great night and if my memory serves me right his wife was taken to Stoke
Mandeville hospital after the gig without him
(webmaster's note : that last bit is
true)
This was the most expensive ticket in Friars
history at £6 (until the rebirth of Friars in 2009)
At this gig Adriana Kaegi failed to appear
for the encore as it turned out due to illness which necessitated an
emergency visit to Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Rumour has it that only the sheer scale of
their next production (it included a waterfall) stopped them making a
third triumphant appearance.
Kid Creole has himself been in many 80s
inspired revival shows and toured with the musical Oh What a Night. KC and
the Coconuts occasionally still play gigs and have always been a going
concern although these days Darnell and Bongo Eddie are
the only survivor from the classic line up.....which
came back to Friars in 2009 and played one of the best Friars gigs ever.
